Fourth son of Duke Wilhelm of Schlesqig-Hostein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg. Prospective Danish heir apparent 1851. Prince of Denmark 1853, Danish heir apparent 1863. Succeeded King Frederik VII as King Christian IX in 1863.
