Third son of Landgrave Ludwig IX and brother to Landgrave Ludwig X, later Grand Duke Ludwig I of Hesse and by Rhine. Uncle to Queen Frederika, consort of King Gustaf IV Adolf. Prince of Hessen 1806. Prince of Hesse and by Rhine 1816.
