Oldest son of Duke Georg II Duke of Saxe-Meinengen. Succeeded him as Duke Bernhard III 1914.

Married to Princess Charlotte of Prussia, sister of Emperor Wilhelm II of Germany and first cousin of Queen Victoria of Sweden, King Gustaf V’s consort.
Received the order at a visit to Stockholm in conjunction with the Olympic Games.
