Biography
Son of Prince Friedrich August of Holstein-Gottorp, Prince-bishop of Lübeck. Hereditary Duke of Oldenburg 1773. Hereditary Prince 1777. Succeeded his father as Duke 1785 under his cousin Prince Peter’s regency. Nephew to King Adolf Fredrik of Sweden and brother to Queen Charlotta of Sweden, King Karl XIII:s consort.
